Graduate Site Visit to Mount Street, Manchester

The Manchester branch of the IStructE L&C Young Members Committee organised a site visit for students and graduate engineers to the Windmill Green development on Mount Street in Manchester. The project is a part refurbishment, part new build structure and the existing reinforced concrete frame is 5 storeys high.

Prior to the start of the visit, a presentation was delivered which briefly touched on the BIM model. Ryan Southern, Site Manager, guided the attendees around the site for around hour and a half, giving them an in depth insight into the project. The tour was specifically tailored to suit the structural aspects of the build and students were encouraged to ask questions during the walk around.

Following the visit, there has been lots of positive feedback from the students on their internal online survey. A member of the group said of the visit:

‘We were particular impressed with the carbon fibre, how two cranes are being coordinated on site and the structural design of the building. The visit was really informative.’

The lecturer, who attended the visit from the University of Salford, has requested further site visits for more students in the future.
