Kier Professional Services, working together with Kier Construction on St Alban’s Place Leeds, were able to arrange a site visit for 8 No first year students from the University of Leeds on the 10th November. Tom Garnett of KPS, who is a mentor for a group of students from the University of Leeds, said;
“The University of Leeds has introduced industrial mentors who are assigned to a tutor group within the University. Each tutor group has roughly 8 students in and the aim of the mentors is to give industry advice and to give them an insight into the industry as a whole. As part of this, we are asked to take the students on 2 site/office visits per year as well as answer any questions they may have. This is a programme that is led by the students and we as mentors are supposed to be contacted by themselves when they would like a site visit/office visit which helps them gain the communication and organisation skills needed for work.
This is for first year students only and is a great way for them to get an idea of what area of construction they would like to progress a career in. Most of the students have never been on site before so have no idea what to expect so this is a way for them to see what they are learning in the classroom being put into practice.
The students are on a mix of degrees (all Civil Engineering based) but with some doing Civil & Structural, Civil with Project management and Architectural Engineering and so on.”
The students thoroughly enjoyed the visit and are planning to come back in around a year’s time to see progress on the site.
