National Apprenticeship Week – 5th to 9th March 2018

The 5th March kicked off the National Apprenticeship Week across the UK and during this week employers and apprentices from across England came together to celebrate the success of apprenticeships whilst encouraging more people to choose them as a pathway to a great career. We undertook the following events;

Leeds

Various events have taken place in Yorkshire over the course of the week. These have included the Leeds Apprenticeship Recruitment fair which was attended by over 6500 young people and parents. Donna Howard then represented Kier at the Sheffield City Region’s Be:Inspired event with Kier Services to provide information to young people from schools and colleges.

Astrea Academy then hosted a site visit and information session for Sheffield College – the
site team provided information on career options and entry routes into the industry, whilst talking about their own experience at the same time, The final event of the week was Crawshaw’s Academy careers event at which Donna was supported by Stephen Fry who provided his own career journey and a real insight into what the industry can offer.

Liverpool

The National Apprenticeship Week has tied in so well with our recent activities working with schools and colleges to promote construction opportunities and the diverse range of apprentice roles available.

We have been able offer the opportunity for students to book a space on the Open Doors Event and see behind the hoarding and visit sites in Wales and England and gain a real insight into the Build Environment.

Manchester

The Windmill Green project team delivered a construction careers workshop and speed interviews for students studying engineering, joinery and the Built Environment at the Manchester College.  Andrew Brayne (PM) and Gavin Wright (QS) were supported at the
event by M&E subcontractor, Lorne Stewart.
Kier returned to Bolton St Catherine’s Academy for a year 9 careers day. A big thank you to Helen Hughes, SHE Coordinator, who was subjected to a gruelling day of speed interviews about her career path and role within construction. KCN built the new Bolton St Catherine’s Academy in 2012.
Kier Manchester took ‘Shaping your World’ to a STEM Careers Fair at Culcheth High School in Warrington. This was delivered in partnership with Kier Environmental Services and the ambassadors promoted our VIBE site and the guide to an awesome career in construction literature to Year, 8, 9, 10 and 11 pupils with an additional session for parents.
