Prostate Cancer UK “Football to Amsterdam” Charity Bike Ride

On the 7th June a group of friends from Kier, H E Simm and the CIS in Manchester decided to partake in the ‘Football to Amsterdam’ Charity Bike Ride for Prostate Cancer UK.

The team cycled an incredible 145 miles over two days starting at the home of Barnsley FC, the Oakwell Stadium, and finishing at the Johan Cruiff Arena in Amsterdam. Unfortunately, the weather conditions during the cycle were not in the teams favour; the ride to Hull was in hard wind, whilst the trip from Rotterdam to the Hague was completed in heavy driving rainfall and 62mph swirling winds.

Over 350 football fans partook in the annual bike ride to raise awareness and much needed funding to help fight prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer found in men and claims a victim every 45 minutes; that is two men during a single football match. This statistic is one that Prostate Cancer UK are on a mission to change and with ongoing funding they hope to make the disease one that future generations will no longer need to fear.

The team consisting of Man United, Liverpool and Everton fans have managed to raise an amazing £23,000 so far. This tremendous achievement cumulated in Vicky Simm (H E Simm) and Gareth Leek both receiving blue jerseys for raising double their pledge amount, and Sarah Goudlen (H E Simm) and Steve Henry being awarded orange jerseys for being top fundraisers and managing to raise £6K and £4.8K respectively!

A huge thank you must also go out to all our sponsors: Lyndon SGB, Summit Scaffolding, Altrad NSG, Trad Safety Systems, Mayo Civils, DCUK, Staybills, MJS Joinery, Civils and Construction UK, Premier Waste, SPL Fire Safety, Datascope Systems Ltd, Power Towers, Mark Calrke Health and Safety Consultants, MEP Hire, Operative Performance, Carmel, Stock Brickwork, Huyton Asphalt and R&M Developments.
