Apprentice Bricklayer joins Durham HQ project

In October we were delighted to welcome Beth Carwardine as an apprentice Bricklayer to our project at Durham County Councils Head Quarters.

Beth is employed via one of our subcontractors, Shaw Construction and has said below her reasons for wanting to join the industry:

Inspiration for working in construction?

Beth was extremely keen to join the industry as she thought she could deliver high standard of workmanship. She was also keen to work on different projects from schools, hospitals, theatres etc. where she could put her name against what was achieved and how the building helped the local community.

Progress during apprenticeship

Beth is currently in year one of her bricklaying apprenticeship, where she is working on site 4 days a week then attending college 1 day. Working onsite has allowed her to develop skills taught at college and put into real life practice. She has found the hands on experience most beneficial and would recommend this to other young people who want to start their working career in construction.

What does Beth enjoy about construction?

Beth enjoys seeing progress made on a daily basis with all work she is involved with, especially when a project is complete how she can look back and see how her work put in can benefit so many people and their needs. She also prefers physical work exercises rather than job roles being office based.

Previous job roles

Beth has only recently joined the construction industry at the start of her apprenticeship. Before joining Beth worked in the hospitality industry as bar staff member, where she enjoyed it but wanted to start something more career progress and to her strengths.

Welcome to the industry!
