Citizens Theatre – progress on site

Our project at Citizens Theatre is progressing well with demolition to internal floors ongoing with lots of complex temporary works to form new openings at each floor. The steel beam installation for the new floors has been completed on the third floor, with the 2nd floor due to begin soon.

The stage and basement floors have been carefully removed to expose the historic stage equipment and this has been stored off-site until the planned re-installation.

The external steel frame structure now reached its last phase with the south-west corner nearing completion. Steel floor decking has been installed at the east and north of the steel frame and the concrete pours are due to commence by the end of the month.

The site itself is very historic and the project team have recovered some old bottles during the auditorium floor dig – there were some thirsty workers from mid-19th century! You can read more about the history of the building here.

The project also has a resident ghostly figure and they have had two sightings a year apart from two operatives who have never crossed paths. A lady of Victorian dress wear was clearly spotted this week with the description matching last year’s demolition operative. Google searches have shown there had been some regular sightings of a Victorian lady, a fully dressed actor and a child selling strawberries within the building.
