First Light Pavilion – Jodrell Bank – progress on site

We’ve seen incredible progress on the construction of the National Lottery Heritage Fund supported First Light Pavilion over the last few months.

Since the momentous concrete pour that created the unique domed roof which took place in October last year, the building has really started to take shape and we’re delighted to be able to share some images from inside the dome.

The First Light Pavilion will dramatically transform the visitor experience at Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre. Designed by HASSELL, the stunning new building will house a gallery dedicated to telling the story of Jodrell Bank, an immersive auditorium, and a new education hub and cafe.

Current progress on site includes:

  • Roof membrane recently completed
Service trenches now being installed for water, power, data and fibre
  • Earth tubes being installed – these will take the external air, run it through the tubes and the earth naturally cools (summer) or heats (winter) the air as required therefore reducing the size of heating and ventilation plant in the building
  • Back-fill is ongoing and due to being able to store previously excavated materials, the project has saved half a million pounds in re-using this site won material in lieu of importing
  • Internal works are progressing well and will include a museum, exhibition area, auditorium with 270 degree curved screen, cafes, kitchen, plantroom, offices, meeting rooms and staff space
