First Light Pavilion – Curved Screen Installation

The installation of the 270 degree curved auditorium screen has recently begun at the First Light Pavilion project at Jodrell Bank.

The dome screen is supplied by Spitz Inc. who are arguably the world leaders in projection domes with over 1,200 installations worldwide. Spitz projection domes are used for planetariums, large format film, simulators and themed attractions. This is only the second screen of this size in the UK, the other is in the National Space Centre in Leicester.

The screen itself is manufacutred in the United States and after being shipped here, it was held at Liverpool docks for 11 days before being released for delivery to the project.

The installation will take four weeks to complete and the screen will be:

  • 20m diameter
  • 6.2m high at centre
  • Weighs 2.2tonne
  • 1mm thick aluminium perforated sheets
  • 180 degree clear vision – 270 degree restricted
