Building a Waste Free World Workshops

Last week Claire Straughan and Garry Bothwell attended the St Francis of Assisi C of E primary school in Ingelby Barwick to deliver two ‘Building a Waste Free World’ workshops to year 5 students.

As a parent of a child at the school, Garry received a letter to particpate in their science week so an activity was agreed on and a presentation pulled together which included:

  • Introductions on how we progressed from school to our current roles
  • A synopsis on previous projects completed at Kier and what projects are live on site
  • Why is waste a problem in construction industry and how we can reduce this
  • The importance of early engagement with different teams
  • Examples of prefabrication and an explanation of what modular construction is
  • What are Kier Construction Waste Targets

The children had to work in teams to see what produced the most waste, mega blocks or cardboard etc. They used the comparison of building a project using Lego (premade bricks, all planned and designed to fit together precisely, with instructions etc.) or using cardboard boxes, paper, scissors, paper, glue etc. and seeing, which process generated the most waste. They then talked about applying this approach to construction.
