Completion of Spen Valley Leisure Centre

We have recently handed over the new £18.6m Spen Valley Leisure Centre to Kirklees Council, delivered via the YORbuild2 framework. The centre will officially open its doors to the general public on 28 February.

This new facility will hugely improve the leisure offer for the residents of North Kirklees with an 8 lane, 25 metre main pool, an activity pool with a moveable floor and spectator seating in the pool areas. The building boasts a large fitness suite, two exercise studios with flexibility for other use and a dedicated blackout spin studio. Two changing villages are available which include family cubicles, baby change and large team changing areas. The orientation of the building has been designed to minimise solar gain and incorporates photovoltaic panels and a CHP boiler.

The centre is also inclusive for all members of the community and includes facilities for people with disabilities, a building design that is dementia friendly and a café where people can meet and socialise.

Committed to leaving lasting local legacies, we have worked with Kirklees Council and the local community to deliver the following social value throughout the duration of the project:

  • 23 school/college workshops
  • 8 school/college site visits
  • 14 work experience placements
  • 144 weeks for existing apprentices
  • 5 project-initiated apprentices
  • 9 people progressed into employment
