NHBT Blood Centre, Barnsley – Turf Cutting

To celebrate the start on site for the Yorkshire Blood Centre in Barnsley, Kier Northern was invited to the turf cutting ceremony on the 18th January 2018. Phase 1 works have now commenced on site by developer / contractor Marshalls Construction, which includes the construction of the building shell and core and associated external landscaping. Phase 1 works are due to be complete November 2018.

Kier have been appointed as the P22 PSCSP for the phase 2 works which includes the detailed fit out of the 6750m2 building, which will replace the NHS Blood and Transplant sites currently based in Leeds and Sheffield.

The main function of the centre is to process and distribute blood products around Yorkshire. The new centre will house environmentally controlled laboratories to research and develop advanced cell therapies. Three laboratory departments will be housed on the ground floor with one laboratory department, open plan office space, meeting rooms and catering facilities located on the first floor

The building is due for completion in 2020 and will become one of the most advanced cell research centres in the world as well as attracting high-tech jobs to the local area.
