Gaining experience in Construction in the North West

Kier have over 2000 different roles and to demonstrate this we supported five 15 years old students from Neston High School. They expressed an interest in construction and wanted to attend a fortnight of work experience including office and site experience.

Their interest was raised following a career event we attended at their school when we were completing Neston Leisure Centre (based next door) and following site visits that they attended, they wanted to learn more about the industry.

During this fortnight we also supported a student from Maricourt Catholic School who was interested in office and construction administration and a construction student from a local training provider Blackburne House.

Working closely with colleagues and the schools, we arranged a number of activities throughout the two weeks including an insight into pre-construction, construction and aftercare.

Areas covered by the students included Introduction to Kier, Health and Safety, Bid Process, Marketing and Bid Presentations, Administration, Cost Management, Procurement, Planning and Design Development. The students attended client meetings and design meetings and gained an in depth knowledge of construction.

The students also gained hand on experience working with various site managers on their projects to understand the requirements of the role and gain a greater insight into a live site.
