Completion of Ground and First Floor at Dixons Academy

On the 27th August we successfully handed over Phase 1a (ground and first floors) of the new Dixons 6th Form Academy to a delighted client. In addition the site team achieved early completion of the ground floor LRC on 21st August in time for GCSE results day and the College’s 6th Form registration. Phase 1b, which comprises basement kitchens and dining areas, is ready for handover this Friday 13th September.

Phase 2 will hand over in March 2020 and comprises floors 2,3 and 4 of the mill building which will provide additional classroom space, IT suites, science labs, break-out areas and a lecture theatre. This phase also includes a new build sports hall and refurbishment of the existing coach house to provide offices and changing rooms.

The mill and coach house were originally built in the 1880’s and are Grade II listed. Whilst the mill had been previously refurbished to be used as office accommodation for the NHS, the coach house was derelict with dilapidated leaking roofs and internal water damage which requires a major refurbishment as part of our works.

Wesley Davies, Executive Principal, said:

“I have been really pleased with the work Kier has undertaken at Douglas Mills on behalf of the DFE for Dixons Academies Trust. The work has been completed to a high standard with full client engagement along the journey. Douglas Mills has been transformed into a modern learning space whilst maintaining many original features and full respect been paid to its Grade II status. Finally, Kier staff have delivered on time and have been a pleasure to work with and I look forward to seeing the final phase handed over in March.”
