The Kier Foundation – Chief Executive Special Award

In May, an event was held in London to celebrate the Kier Foundation turning ten. Colleagues from across the country came together to recognise the fantastic achievements the charity has accomplished over this time. From challenges where colleagues have walked, cycled, and even rowed parts of the country (and abroad) to bake sales, and much more, over £2.3.m has been raised for 638 charities across the UK. As part of the celebrations on Thursday, some of our charity champions, trustees and fundraisers presented a cheque of £300,000 to End Youth Homelessness, our charity partner, for all the funds raised to date. During the event Peter Gleave, Dale Capstick and Ben Bolton, who were part of the English 3000 Mountain Challenge team for Spring Into Action, were presented with the Chief Executive’s Special Award. This was for the team undertaking the challenge and also the phenomenal fundraising efforts that has seen them raise a fantastic £14,137. You can watch a short video of the challenge...

Construction Minister visits Shakespeare North Playhouse

Yesterday we welcomed the Construction Minister, Lee Rowley MP, to visit the recently-completed Shakespeare North Playhouse in Prescot. Hosting the visit were Andrew Davies and Sophie Timms from Kier. They were joined by the Leader of Knowsley Council, Cllr Graham Morgan, Andrew Donaldson (Exec Director, Communities & Neighbourhoods), Melanie Lewis (Chief Executive of the Playhouse), Marie Rimmer (MP for St Helens South and Whiston), and John Fogarty (Liverpool City Region Combined Authority). The attraction is the first of its kind in the Liverpool city region, and the venue’s official opening weekend is Saturday 16 July and Sunday 17 July.  Working collaboratively with Knowsley Council, Kier is proud to have played its part in delivering this project, which is the first of its kind in the Liverpool city region. As well as having a significant cultural impact regionally and nationally, the project is a wonderful representation of modern and traditional construction techniques where in keeping with the Jacobean design, the theatre is built from reclaimed hardwood, designed and crafted by hand; a traditional method of construction rarely used in the 21st century.  The Minister was keen to learn about apprentices on the project and he spent some time with members of Kier staff and subcontractors who either started their careers as an apprentice or are currently employed as...

Steel Signing Event at Lelley Fields Crematorium

Last week we were delighted to host a steel signing event at the £9.6m Lelley Fields Crematorium project in Holderness to mark a key milestone in the project. Due to complete in early 2023, the site will offer peace, tranquility, natural landscaping, and state-of-the-art facilities to create a fitting place to commemorate loved ones. The event included a welcome from Cllr Jonathan Owen, Leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, a tour of the site, and a display of building and landscape plans.  Works began on site in 2021 and we are making excellent progress with the project to deliver a new state-of-the-art facility in the heart of Holderness, working to the design of the council’s team in infrastructure and facilities. Kier hands over Shakespeare North Playhouse to Knowsley Council

After more than ten years of planning, two years of construction work and a global pandemic to contend with, the long-held dream of creating a Shakespearean theatre in the heart of Prescot has finally been realised. On Friday we celebrated the handover of the building and the completion of construction works with Knowsley Council and the local councilors. The attraction, which is the first of its kind in the Liverpool city region, was handed over to Knowsley Council on Friday (27 May). It was procured through the North West Construction Hub framework, with work starting in early 2020. The new building was designed and constructed to remain true to the authenticity of the Jacobean design while making it a modern, vibrant and accessible space for visitors.  The Playhouse includes a flexible theatre with a capacity for between 320 and 472 seats, based on the iconic 17th century ‘cockpit-in-court’ design, a digital gallery, visitor centre, and additional performance spaces including an outdoor performance garden, coffee shop, and office space.  The theatre is built from reclaimed hardwood, designed and crafted by hand; a traditional method of construction rarely used in the 21st century. In 2020, Kier launched the Building for a Sustainable World framework which focuses on both environmental and social sustainability and this project was part of a UK-first trial of technology to support our strategy to deliver net-zero carbon emissions. Through its work with procurement partner, Sunbelt Rentals, the project trialed the use of the PUNCH Flybrid flywheel technology to assess if the innovation could reduce the energy required to power a static crane. The innovation is derived from...
