Open Doors leads to Apprenticeship

In March, Kier took part in the annual Build UK ‘Open Doors’ week. One of the attendees, Kaylem, attended with his support workers and showed a brilliant attitude and great interest in a career in construction, particularly in drylining. Senior Project Manager David Wilson recognised Kaylem’s interest and agreed to work with myself and other support services to support Kaylem in his ambition. David involved our supply chain at the St Albans Place project, and I’m please to say that B&K systems offered him an apprenticeship, with Kaylem starting in May.

Give Construction a Try

On the 16th May, Donna and Steven Fry attended the ‘Give Construction a Try’ event at the John Charles Centre for Sport. The event brings together various contractors and training providers who deliver interactive activities throughout the day, showing students the range of careers that the construction industry offers. Kier showcased joinery, plumbing, and drylining, and provided information on entry routes.

Aimed at local schools in the area, the event was very well attended and Donna has since been asked to be involved in the planning of next year’s event. A huge ‘thank you’ to Steve for his support!

Meet the Buyer event, Derby

On the 17th May, Donna, supported by Supply Chain manager Neil Carson, attended the Meet the Buyer Event, which was extremely well attended. It provided the vital opportunity to speak to the supply chain in preparation for potential works in the Chesterfield area.

Leeds College of Building Employability Video Interviews

The Team at St Albans were approached by the Leeds College of Building to take part in a new project. This involved the team completing video interviews which would then be used for use in construction-related teaching. The project’s main intention was to examine employability skills while trying to break down misconceptions of the industry and promoting women in construction. David Wilson and Donna Howard were initially interviewed, followed by Philomena England, Katherine Hill, and Rebecca Calam.
