Work experience in Liverpool

We have always supported students looking for work experience but in July we have surpassed our targets and supported over 15 students ages ranging from 15 to 23 to provide an opportunity to experience construction over 6 sites and the Speke office. Many students have come to Kier through previous meeting such as career events, site visits in the past such as Neston Leisure Centre or Open Doors at Huntington and Kaplan.

Our sites, KWS and the Speke office have embraced the mentoring ethic and fully supported these young people on site, providing genuine work experiences where they have taken the time to explain roles, policies and procedures and shared their enthusiasm for their role at Kier.

The students gained an insight not only into construction but into the world of work, getting to work on time – students from Neston took two train journeys and one took his bike to cycle to our Connah’s Quay site.

They each received a comprehensive health and safety talk where many were surprised with the statistics and found the 5 SHE Basic’s a great practical support. The students found about out pre-construction by sitting in meeting with design and bid teams as well as hand on experience at site offices and getting to know the teams.
We provided mountains of PPE as skinny jeans were great for fashion but not that practical on site!

During their work experience the students have learnt more about their own abilities. It has helped them explore their strengths and weaknesses and identify the gaps in their skills. It has encouraged them to improve their interpersonal skills, communication skills, team-work and time management as well as gaining a greater knowledge of construction.

Thank you to everyone in supporting these students at Kaplan, Connah’s Quay, Huntington, Parklife, Merseycare, Rhyl and colleague at the Speke office and KWS. We have been able to provide a real insight into construction and also provided a great opportunity to help these young people in their career journey.
