Opening doors to opportunities in Rhyl

The new Christ the Word Catholic School is being built by Martin Walsh and the team to replace the neighbouring Ysgol Mair Primary School and Blessed Edward Jones Catholic High School in Rhyl.

The project is funded by Denbighshire County Council in partnership with the Welsh government through its 21st Century Schools Programme, with capacity for 420 primary and 500 secondary school pupils.

The site has provided an ideal opportunity for Denbighshire County Council, through their ADTRAC programme, DWP, Career Wales and CITB to encourage individuals who are currently not in employment, education or training into employment.

On the 2nd October, Martin and the team, including subcontractors, opened the site doors and welcomed eight individuals to the site, providing a guided tour and a talk on construction. This resulted in two individuals completing work experience for Jennings, a local groundworks company based in Colwyn Bay. Jennings were so impressed that both Nathan and Aaron, who completed the work placements, have now been given full time apprenticeship positions.

The new building is set to open in autumn 2019, with overall completion set for Summer 2020. The demolition of the existing school buildings and the remaining external works to the sports/play areas will commence once the school building is finished.
