£29.5m Student Accommodation contract award

We are delighted to confirm that our Manchester office has been selected as preferred bidder for the construction of the Birley Fields Student Accommodation project for Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU). This £29.5 million project will see the construction of three blocks of student accommodation that will be 16, 11 and 6 storeys high, providing 491 student beds in total. MMU is the largest campus based undergraduate university in the UK with a student population of 37,000. Birley Fields will increase the availability of quality student accommodation for the MMU student population. This will be our third project for MMU following the successful delivery of a Scape project and the good relationship we have built with them on our current 6 Great Marlborough Street project. The site is located in a prominent elevated city centre location just off Princess Parkway, providing another opportunity to further raise our profile in the city centre and in the student accommodation sector. This project means that we now have 1,345 student beds in various stages of project delivery across Northern. The project will consist of an in situ concrete frame, traditional brickwork facades, offsite manufactured bathroom pods and the full internal fit out inclusive of all furniture, fixtures and equipment. Works are planned to start on site in early 2019 with a 100 week construction programme.    ...

Kier appointed for £19m iconic Shakespeare North Playhouse

We are delighted to announce that we have been named as preferred bidder to build a brand new iconic Shakespeare North Playhouse for Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council. The £19m attraction is the first of its kind in Knowsley and the Liverpool City Region and will sit in the heart of Prescot town centre. When complete, it will house a 350-seat theatre, performance studio, exhibition and education centre, coffee shop and office space. Plans for a theatre in Prescot are more than 10 years in the making. The vision of Shakespeare North is to celebrate the Elizabethan and Jacobean heritage of Knowsley, a place with historic links to the Earl’s of Derby and Lord Strange’s men. Work is due to start on site mid-2018 with construction work due to complete to coincide with William Shakespeare’s birthday in April 2020. The Playhouse will then welcome its first guests later that year. As part of the project, we will be working with the local supply chain to strengthen the local economy. During construction 11 new apprenticeships and seven new jobs will be created and work placement, training, education and community activities for local schools will also be available.
